In recent months we have been looking for new ways to approach rowing both technically and mentally. We have discovered that the use of metaphor and symbolism can be very effective when use properly. In the spirit of our head coach who left our venerated teammate Patrick "The Noob" O'Dunne as he headed west with these parting words: "Look, Pat....I need a little more John Wayne and a little less Richard Simmons.", we are employing the same tactics with great effect. The recent comparison that seems to be getting a lot out of Senor Lanzone is "A little more Bruce Lee, A little less Clubber Lang". It seems to be having the most technical effect at the catch. Mentally, when that call is made, there seems to be a calm throughout the boat as we relax the muscles on the recovery before we strike the catch and really get to business. Compare the two videos and notice the difference in intensity levels of both Bruce and Clubber and draw your own conclusions. I challenge you to try and use these types of calls during your rowing and see how it affects the boat. Check out this video for an idea of how not to be.
