Notes on the weekend

Just a few interesting points:

  • It's a good thing all my smack-talking paid off. A big WAY TO GO (and I knew you would) to the Husky Men for kicking the absolute crap out of the Stanford Men's Varsity 8+. Man Spamchang, if I had a dollar for every second that the Huskies beat the trees--I mean Cardinals--by this weekend, I'd have... six dollars! Jesus, that's not even close. Good thing we didn't venture into that "friendly wager" after all... or is it? I'm so proud of you, boys! Congratulations!
P.S. did I mention the JV race??
  • The weather here is unbelievable. I think it actually started raining at about 10:30 or 11:00 pm on Saturday night... it is now Monday morning at 8:00 am and it is still raining. Maybe even snowing. Whatever it's doing, it's really done a number on Carnegie, and things are really really ridiculously flooded. I shudder at the thought of the conditions at Mercer. Someone said something about this being a "nor'easter". I don't know what the hell that is, but I don't think I like it very much. I think we're going to be indoors at least for today and part of tomorrow... we're going to "play it by ear". The good news is... we got this morning off to enjoy looking out the windows at the rain (and keep the erg room uncluttered since it is going to be a hot commodity today), which is exactly what I'm going to do right now as I head into the kitchen for some breakfast.
  • See you out there,

you're free to redeem such post-hoc restitution in the form of coffee/meal when we're next in the same metropolitan area. i don't back down from supporting my team, sometimes to the detriment of my reputation for impartiality :P and no dissing the stanford 2V--those are my boys too, the whole team is (i don't really know the frosh, but what the heck, them too). we don't have a large student body to draw roster depth from since we have, um, admissions requirements. (is that what they're called these days? meritocratic barriers to socioeconomic inequality works too.)

i am worried for your financial situation if you honestly didn't have enough money to back your boys...

p.s. Cardinal singular. strictly speaking, colors don't have plurals.

Oh come on, don't give me that school-size crap. If you can't entice people to come row for you by offering them scholarships and an almost-ivy education in gorgeous Palo Alto then that's your problem. Ivies, who can't even offer scholarships, seem to draw considerable talent in similarly-sized student bodies so I'm not buying that argument. If I wasn't mistaken that almost sounds like EXCUSES you're making, there!

P.S. Ok, so colors don't usually have plurals, and Stanford uses "the Cardinal" a little oddly... but how else would you refer to a crew? They're "the Cardinal" and not each in and of themselves "a Cardinal" (constituting a grammatically correct "Cardinals" if referring to them as a group)?
This gets tricky considering all the journalists covering the blues vs. the light blues in this thing called.... what was it... the "boat race"? Some race in England between two colleges or something, not really sure. Plural colors. Who knows.

you're right--it IS our problem that we don't have enough money for scholarships, and there are other factors too. but that still doesn't make the playing field even. the difference between an excuse and a legitimate reason is...what? oh yes. perspective, aka bias. tomato, potato, scholarships.

i mean, at least we don't go bs-ing with grants-in-aid, right?

yes, apparently the Queen's English gets short shrift over here. the plural-noun-as-singular form has grown on me considerably. i try to use number-nonspecific verbs to avoid confusion outside of rowing. those who get confused can go get an education.

p.s. "almost-ivy education"...ouch. that's pretty harsh. i mean, for a second, i considered the possibility that we'd sunk that low, especially in engineering.

p.p.s. if you're not going to accept my post-hoc bet redemption offer, this vastly ungracious winner's rant of yours might help me forget all about it :P
