Cooke's Cuts - May

megan cooke
May’s been good to me. I’ve celebrated a birthday, won a selection regatta, and even gotten myself engaged. In honor of this harnessed girl power, this month is brought to you by all the ladies in my life, or at least the ones in my headphones. I’ve combined some classic tracks along with a few new releases to create a playlist that rocks from start to finish. Go ahead; it’s definitely a playlist to download in its entirety.

  • Goldfrapp - Strict Machine (Benny Benassi Sfaction Extended Mix)
Goldfrapp - We Are Glitter - Strict Machine (Benny Benassi Sfaction Extended Mix)
You know you’re signing up for a good time when Goldfrapp starts off the set. She’s a pro when it comes to belting out hit after hit of groovy electronic tunes. Taste one of her all time classics, Strict Machine, and you’re sure to agree. She’s the underground Madonna, the indie Gwen, and destined to be your next favorite.

  • Yeah Yeah Yeahs - Y Control (Faint Remix)
    Yeah Yeah Yeahs - Y Control Remixes - Single - Y Control
What’s not to like about the Yeah Yeah Yeah’s energetic, alternative variety of rock? This version of Y Control feels just like you are sweating on the venue floor along side Karen O. Her echoing vocals and edgy guitar riffs are backed up with an unstoppable, pumping beat.

  • Camille Jones - The Creeps (Fedde Le Grand Radio Edit)
Camille Jones - The Creeps - EP - The Creeps (Fedde Le Grand Remix)
Just try to listen to this song without humming it five minutes later. The Danish pop star Camille Jones lights up the charts with this synthesized hit, jazzed up by the golden gloves of Fedde Le Grand. With this track Jones adds the perfect spark of energy to any mix.

  • Space Cowboy - My Egyptian Lover (Extended Club Mix)
Space Cowboy - My Egyptian Lover (Extended Club Mix) - Single - My Egyptian Lover
If electro is your game, then here’s your newest favorite. Though the Space Cowboys consist of a couple of guys, it’s Nadia Oh’s vocals on this track that steal the show. The twists and turns of the Egyptian melody, backed by a steady rhythm, make for a hypnotic tune that plays well beyond the club.

  • Pink - U + Ur Hand (Bimbo Jones Remix)
    P!nk - The Remixes - EP - U + Ur Hand
Pink has been rocking the female scene for a couple of years now, and she’s still got plenty of steam left. Add a little remix to her sassy sense of grit pop and you’ve got a song that won’t wear out until you do.

  • Cicada - Cut Right Through (DJ Delicious Remix)
Cicada - Cut Right Through - EP - Cicada Cut Right Through (DJ Delicious Remix)
Though I’ve owned her self titled album for half a year, my ears can’t get enough of Cicada. Her music is instantly timeless yet trendy, catchy yet unique. Her ‘look but don’t touch’ attitude is amusing and refreshing in a world full of promiscuous girls. This version of Cut Right Through is loaded up with bass and has a drop that will make the walls cave in.

  • Eve - Tambourine
    Eve - Tambourine - Single - Tambourine
Eve’s back again and setting it off with a fun track that’s a sneak peek of her upcoming album due in August. The beat is sweet and her raps are spot on, could we have expected anything less?

  • Bjork - Earth Intruders (Extended Mark “Spike” Stent Mix)
Björk - Volta - Earth Intruders (Extended Mark "Spike" Stent Mix)
For years Bjork has relied on creativity and uniqueness instead of sexy dance moves to sell her records, and it’s worked. Here, she’s called on Timberland to funnel her yodels and shrieks into something that rocks steady and beats soundly in true TI fashion. You’ll appreciate Bjork’s distinctiveness on this first EP of the brand new album Volta.

  • Gwen Stefani - Yummy
Gwen Stefani - The Sweet Escape - Yummy
Though I was more of a fan when she was a member of No Doubt, I’ll admit that this pro knows how to put out a hit record. As part of my ladies album, Gwen had to be included for her mass appeal of fashionable glam pop and undeniable likability. I picked this cool track off of The Sweet Escape because it’s sounds so different than anything else playing right now.

Erg Room Classic

  • Madonna - Hung Up (Album Version)
Madonna - Confessions On a Dance Floor - Hung Up
All hail the Queen! How can we give the Classic title to anyone other than Madonna? Taken from the popular Confessions album, Madonna shows us her moves with this club sensation, and boy can she move…still. This track will be the hit of the party for some time, or at least until she gives us her next hit record.

Shout out for Princess Superstar and her mash-up with Mason. It's a great electro/electronic song called "Perfect(Exceeder)." Another great tune if you haven't seen it already, sports fans. Also, it was a close call for my top ten, but I need to put in agood word for Lady Sovereign and praise her "Love Me or Hate Me" single. She's got talent, attitude and quite the mouth on her. But she's funny and has no fear.
These are two great additions to the Chicks Rule playlist. Both are found on iTunes.
