Cooke's Cuts - January

I’ve got music ADD, I don’t like listening to stuff that’s overplayed and I tend to switch up my current work-out playlists every week. I usually “get over” a song after listening to it about 10 times, so I’m constantly searching for new stuff. I look for tracks with a good beat, a lot of bass and an original hook. Here is my first list of ’07. Hate it? Love it? Got something better? Please discuss, recommend or just listen along. Never know, you might find your next favorite song.
-Megan Cooke
- Title: Proper Education (Radio Edit)

Artist: Eric Prydz vs. Floyd

I first heard this at a club after Thanksgiving and the crowd went nuts. This is a brilliant remix of Another Brick in the Wall with a punch of bass that shakes the walls. This will be one of the biggest hits of 2007. This is the same guy who brought you Call on Me a few years ago.
- Title: Faster Kill Pussycat

Artist: Paul Oakenfold

Oakenfold is one of the most well known and longest running mainstream DJ’s. This one has a nice beat, a catchy guitar riff and vocals by Brittany Murphy.
- Title: Kick, Push

Artist: Lupe Fiasco

Makes you want to give skateboarding in the driveway one last try. Nice solid hip hop tune that won’t make your coach blush.
- Title: A Little Bit More (Luke Vibert Mix)

Artist: Jamie Lidell

A bit slower, but it’s worth the wait. This mix has a synthesized keyboard that scales over a seriously bassed up beat. His vocals add a touch of old school to the track.
- Title: Martyr (Booka Shade Full Vocal Mix)

Artist: Depeche Mode

A new spin on a classic. Turn it up to hear a tingling reverberation showcased throughout the song. It’s also hard to beat David Gahan’s eerie vocals in this hit.
- Title: The Things You Say (Dirty South remix)

Artist: Cicada

Cicada’s definitely hot, and her new album has tons of hits to crank away to. This song encapsulates the mood and rhythm of that album nicely.
- Title: The Prayer (Phones Metal Jackin’ Mix)

Artist: Bloc Party

Bloc Party has trusted Phones’ remixes before, and this one is a nice addition to the pile. It’s heavy, a little Nine Inch Nails-ish but the beat is still danceable.
- Title: Grace Kelly

Artist: Mika

This song is pure fun with a falsetto that will make you laugh. Great artist with an uncanny vocal resemblance to Freddy Mercury.
- Title: Is It Love

Artist: iiO

It’s easy to see why iiO’s vocals have been such a staple to trance over the years. I like this song because of its ability to make electronica feel so hauntingly delicate.
For my final track, I present the Erg Room Classic, something everyone has heard and should own.
- Title: Block Rockin’ Beats

Artist: The Chemical Brothers

One of my favorite bands. This is one of their more well known hits but get the album, all the albums, because they never fail to deliver.
That's it for January. I'll have another mix coming soon.
CRASH-B is coming up and you need the right tunes to get you through.

We had a 30 minute erg test today, which was quite painful. Luckily, Proper Education came on and saved my life for four minutes! Now we're off to San Diego for 2 months. Finally, tacos and tans!
